A Century of 4-H

4-H Timeline of Events

Seventh Decade 1963-1972

In 1963, the World Atlas of 4-H was published by the National 4-H Foundation indicating 84 4-H and similar-type programs in 75 countries.

1965 -- The Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) endorsed 4-H work in urban areas.

After the Civil Rights legislation was enacted in 1965, the ECOP and its 4-H subcommittee agreed on a policy to encourage participation of minorities in national 4-H events.

1968 -- In a move to bring 4-H into Washington D.C., Congress established Federal City College as a land grant institution and Extension Service. 4-H began in Washington D.C. the following year.

After 23 years, the International Farm Youth Exchange was renamed International Four-H Youth Exchange in 1971.

The Extension Service premiered Mulligan Stew, the highly successful 4-H television series, in 1972.

The Inter-Agency Youth Project held a national conference of the 15 largest youth serving organizations, including 4-H. As a result, a national collaboration was formed in 1972.

In 1972, 4-H began in Guam and the Virgin Islands.

ECOP endorsed the concept of youth participation in program development in 1972.
In 1975, it approved the new program development format for National 4-H Conference with implementation in 1977.
