A Century of 4-H

4-H Timeline of Events

Historical 4-H Photos

4-H had no one beginning. 4-H began as ideas of practical and applied education passed on to rural youth. These ideas came at a time when education in agriculture was advancing at the university level, but not in public schools. Near the turn of the century, as concern for the future of a generation of rural children rose, the movement that would be called 4-H began. Organized by public school educators, 4-H clubs were preceded by corn clubs for boys and canning clubs for girls.
