Judging Resources for the Clothing
and Construction Project
Judging skills are important to teach 4-H youth. Practicing judging in 4-H clubs and participation in judging contests help 4-H members develop thinking and reasoning skills that will guide them in making logical and scientific judgments throughout their lives. The following resources are intended for introducing judging to 4-H youths in clubs and county workshops.
Classes/Folders: The sample classes were written for Juniors competing in county competitions but the difficulty level would also be appropriate for the easier classes in an Intermediate level contest. Ideas came from topics, activities, and skills in the following 4-H member and leader publications : Let’s Sew!, Fun with Clothes, Clothing Capers, Measuring Up, and the Primary and Junior section of the Sewing Skills Checklist. They have been sorted by topic area.
Some classes offered are complete as written. Others must be constructed from details given in the scenarios and rationales. Rationales are provided for the ranking order of the items presented in the scenario. Placement scores are calculated by the Hormel scoring system (see page 7 of EM4647 Learning Through Judging).
It would be recommended that a contest would have classes from four or five different topic areas and range in difficulty from easy to challenging. The oldest and most skilled Junior member must be challenged by the content of one or two of the classes but the youngest Junior should find one class that covers a familiar topic.
