Snohomish County

Audrey BannonIn Snohomish County, Audrey Bannon is synonymous with 4-H Poultry.  For 30 years, she has been committed to the 4-H youth of the county and the poultry program in particular.  Although her own children have long since left the program, she continues to be active 4-H volunteer.

Audrey co-founded the Bear Creek Bunch 4-H Club in 1976.  She became the county Poultry Program Leader and then the Evergreen State Fair 4-H Poultry Superintendent.  Audrey conducts the county’s annual 4-H poultry clinic.  She is heavily involved with the operation of both the 4-H and Open Poultry shows.  She also has facilitated roundtable discussions and conducted poultry- related classes at State 4-H Forums over the years.

Each November and December, Audrey spends countless hours making holiday wreaths, swags, and table centerpieces that she and the members of the poultry program sell around the county.  She donates all the supplies necessary to make them.  All the funds received go to the poultry program.

In 2005 she was the recipient of the Snohomish County Clover Award.  This is an award given to outstanding 4-H leaders that have had a positive impact on 4-H in general.  Fellow 4-H leaders make the nominations for this award.  Not only has Audrey had an impact on the Poultry Program, she has had a positive impact on the 4-H career of many leaders and fair superintendent.

Jo SimpsonJo Simpson has been a 4-H leader for 15 years, serving as main club leader for a dog project club in Snohomish County.  Her club regularly has a membership of over 60 youth.  Jo has proven to be an outstanding leader and example to these young people, guiding them in learning life skills and mentoring them.

Jo has worked tirelessly to improve the State Dog Project curriculum and program, serving as the first secretary of the state committee and serving as chair of many sub- committees.  She was instrumental in developing the current showmanship curriculum and manual and is the current state judge’s selection committee chair.

Jo was the founder of the Canine Connections program, which began in 2000.  Canine Connections is a program at the Echo Glen Co-educational Juvenile Corrections Facility.  Jo guides the youth there, through 4-H involvement, in raising and training abandoned dogs with social problems.  Each youth must train a dog to a point where they are adopted by a loving family.  Not only does this benefit the dog, but the youth learn a wealth of life skills.  This program has been featured on King 5 TV’s Evening Magazine and in a host of publications.  It is a tremendous program that all 4-H can be proud of and Jo should be recognized for this contribution to our society and the lives of these young people.
