What
is the 4-H Mobile Technology Van?
Thanks to funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the
Washington State 4-H Program, along with the WSU Center to Bridge
the Digital Divide, acquired a van equipped with 15 laptop computers,
a printer, and satellite dish. The van is able to bring high speed
internet access to communities who are otherwise not connected.
It provides a classroom for anything from 4-H project research to
website creation.
For more information about the van, view
a short video.
Van
Availability
The van is available for use by Washington State 4-H
county offices and groups. There is no fee beyond the cost
of fuel. Other stipulations apply -- see reservation
form.
The Mobile Technology Van includes:
- 15 - Dell Latitude wireless laptop computers
- 1 - HP InkJet color printer
- 15 - Rino GPS units
The van is available for use by other Extension and
groups with an educational mission, for $450 per day. This cost
provides a tech person to drive the van to and from the event, satellite
internet connection for the 15 laptops, troubleshooting during the
event, daily per diem for the tech person, and mileage.
Important Note: To have connectivity
with the laptops, you need to have the van parked with a clear view
of the southeastern sky at about a 30 degree angle (no telephone
poles, mountains, trees, buildings, etc.) Heavy rain or clouds can
also cause difficulty.
