4-H Members Continue to Demonstrate Service to Others
--Pat BoyEs

In the month following the devastating storms that so severely affected Lewis, Pacific and Grays Harbor Counties I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of assistance from the 4-H community. Members, their parents and volunteer leaders have been in the forefront of much needed sweat equity to restore devastated families to their homes. We have 4-H members doing extended animal care, shoveling mud-- lots of mud, removing damaged household goods and preparing meals for relief workers. I am awed by their remarkable efforts. Of course that is one of the fundamental principles of 4-H--service to others.

As you have likely seen from photos, the fair grounds in both Lewis and Pacific Counties were heavily damaged. The recovery process will not be measured in weeks but rather months. Your county or club 4-H Program will have many opportunities to contribute to the recovery efforts. Donations for 4-H members who lost their 4-H Project materials including animals in flooding/winds or for 4-H families whose homes were damaged or to the fair grounds for repairs should be directed to:

Grays Harbor County
Grays Harbor 4-H Leader's Council
PO Box R
Elma, WA 98541

Pacific County
Pacific County 4-H Leaders Council
PO Box 88
South Bend, WA 98586

Lewis County
Washington State Employees Credit Union
2015 Kresky
Chehalis, WA 98532
* Be sure to mark it for 'Lewis County 4-H Families' there are several other flood relief funds being managed by the Credit Union so be sure to specify 4-H families.

Please continue to think of ways we can all assist our 4-H community in Lewis, Pacific and Grays Harbor counties to get back on their feet.

Shooting Sports Instructors Needed from Western WA
--Janet Schmidt

Several counties in Western Washington have requested 4-H Shooting Sports Training however, it is difficult to provide the training at a reasonable cost when we have so few National Certified 4-H Shooting Sports Instructors from west of the Cascades.  We desperately need more national instructors in rifle, archery and shotgun from Western Washington.  Note that the National 4-H Shooting Sports Workshop is scheduled for April 13-18, 2008, in Kerrville, Texas.  I have a limited amount of funds that could be applied towards sending one or more volunteers to attend the training.  The early bird registration is due by January 30.  For more information, refer to the shooting sports website at http://4h.wsu.edu/projects/shooting.htm or contact Janet Schmidt, schmidtj@wsu.edu or (509) 397-6290.

PowerPoint Presentation for Healthy Youth Summit
--Pat BoyEs

See the PowerPoint Jennifer Leach used to present information related to the Healthy Youth Survey data for Wahkiakum County. Please note slide number 110 and 111 especially as it relates to questions about 4-H.  The PowerPoint is a longitudinal study of youth attitudes toward risk behaviors in Wahkiakum County. Jennifer is helping with a Youth Summit in Wahkiakum County that is being sponsored by the Wahkiakum Community Network that looks at this data and then asks the youth what their feelings are. It is great process of using the Healthy Youth Survey Data in a meaningful way.  You may want to check with your community network to see if a similar process is being or has been conducted in your area.

4-H Natural Resource Educators Directory: Information Needed
--Emily Burt

The WA State 4-H Core Committee is collecting information for a directory of WSU Extension staff specializing in forestry and natural resource education.  The goal for this directory is to facilitate effective communication between those in WSU Extension working to offer natural resource programming to youth.  If you are a natural resource educator or offer natural resource programming, please be sure to check the directory for accuracy and provide additional information.  Additions and corrections can be made by contacting Emily Burt at (509)775-5235 or emburt@wsu.edu.

National 4-H Volunteer Strategy Update
--Barbara Stone

National 4-H Headquarters will be providing leadership for a 3-part process that will result in a national strategy around 4-H volunteer development.

There will be 1) focus groups of 4-H volunteer specialists on the current status of volunteerism in the 4-H system, volunteer trends, and what that means for our system; 2) an analysis of the focus group results; and 3) a convening of thought leaders to review the analysis and recommend new systems, models and promising practices for engaging volunteers in 4-H that that will reflect and sustain the 4-H organization of the future.

4-H volunteer development specialists will have opportunities for input and involvement throughout the process.  I will be in touch with those of you that have indicated an interest in being involved.  If you have not been in touch with me, but wish to be directly involved, please let me know.

The timeline is currently set to introduce the national strategy at the State Program Leaders and National Leadership meeting in April 2008, in Boston.  The strategy will then be reviewed, finalized and introduced by National 4-H Headquarters and state 4-H volunteer specialists in the fall—hopefully at the Galaxy conference.

On a related note, I announced the anticipated 2009 National Extension Conference on Volunteerism has been put on hold until the recommendations from the strategy process were available.  Based on the feedback from the 4-H volunteer specialists, who were concerned about putting the conference on hold, this is being reconsidered.   We are exploring the potential for a conference in Spring 2009 that would bring people together around the proposed national 4-H volunteer strategy; that would also appeal to a broader Extension audience related to volunteerism; and be held in a location that is easily accessible.  While 4-H is certainly a leader in volunteerism across the Extension system, we also have an obligation and opportunity for all Extension staff to understand the issues and build skills for utilizing volunteers effectively.  More information will be shared as it becomes available.

I look forward to your ideas as we build a stronger, strategic vision of volunteer development in 4-H.
