NAE4-HA Pre-Conference on Research and Evaluation
--Joseph L. Donaldson

The NAE4-HA Research and Evaluation Committee is pleased to announce a special pre-conference to the 2007 NAE4-HA Annual Conference, October 21-25, Atlanta. Participants will develop and advance their skills in using program evaluation for program improvement and impact reporting. This pre-conference has two concurrent tracks. The first track is targeted to evaluation beginners and it will introduce NAE4-HA members to program evaluation in 4-H Youth Development Programs. The second track will be for NAE4-HA members who have an intermediate level of knowledge and skills in program evaluation and wish to advance their knowledge and build the capacity of their organization. This pre-conference will focus on practical, applied solutions to program evaluation problems.

Track One - $75
Evaluation at the Local Level: Where to Start, What to Do!
Sunday, October 21, 2007
8 am - 5 pm
Limited to 50 participants

This all day workshop will develop and advance the participants' skills in select basics of evaluation related to the "doing" and the "write-up," referenced to the logic model. The participants will explore fundamentals including defining purpose, appropriate methodology (ies), data gathering, and straightforward analysis/presentation of data related to evaluation goals and responses to different stakeholder groups. The workshop will emphasize a hands-on, cooperative learning approach. We will explore evaluation from a diversity of delivery modes considering evaluation for traditional and nontraditional programs. Participants will use existing "authentic" data (e.g., ES-237 information and data collected by county level Extension faculty) for practice and as models for various evaluation tasks. Each participant will receive a package of materials, articles, and samples.

Track Two - $85
Building Greater Evaluation Capacity
Sunday, October 21, 2007
8 am - 5 pm
Limited to 50 participants

This track is designed for individuals who have an intermediate knowledge of evaluation. While this track is open to all Extension 4-H professionals, state-level staff will find this track especially valuable for building evaluation capacity in their state. Sessions will include:

Chuck Graves Retirement
--Pat BoyEs

Chuck Graves has indicated that he will retire effective June 1, 2007. Chuck has provided leadership for Volunteer Development, 4-H Name and Emblem and has worked diligently to communicate clear information about applicable policies and regulations, particularly those tied to 4-H's tax exempt status. We wish Chuck well as he wraps up his 37-year federal career and looks to other opportunities for the future.

Dr. Barbara Stone (bstone@csrees.usda.gov) will assume leadership for the Volunteer Development responsibilities previously under Chuck's leadership, and any questions related to 4-H Name and Emblem or other policies and regulations should be forwarded to Maria Arnold (marnold@csrees.usda.gov).

All of us at National 4-H Headquarters, CSREES would like to thank Chuck for his dedicated service to CSREES and 4-H. Please join us in wishing Chuck (cgraves@csrees.usda.gov) a happy retirement.
