4-H License Plate Update
--Pat BoyEs
Thank you for your efforts to garner the 3500 signatures needed for the 4-H License Plate petition that will be submitted to the Washington State Department of Licensing Board this fall. I am happy to report that we have reports from 24 counties of a steady progress toward our goal of 3500 signatures by September 1! Visit the 4-H License Plate website at http://4-h.wsu.edu/foundation/licenseplate.htm for information, graphics and details on this effort. Two license plate display boards have been distributed per district. Please be sure to keep these circulating to promote our signature campaign.
Several of you have asked how the funds generated by the 4-H License Plate project will be used to support our programs and activities. Keep in mind that we must have the Department of Licensing Board approve our petition, have the 2008 Legislature approve our petition and that the first license plate will not become available until January 2009. When the revenues begin to roll in, 25% of the funds will be used to directly support county projects through the Burcalow Grant Process. Counties have the opportunity twice a year to apply for special funds to support their efforts from the Burcalow Fund which is administered by the 4-H Foundation. The remaining 75% of the funds will be used for 4-H Program support including publications, record books and other club support materials, the publications/curriculum including EM2778 CD, event support to increase access for events like State 4-H Teen Conference, Know Your Government and 4-H Forum. These are just a few examples of the opportunities the 4-H License Plate will provide for us to strengthen 4-H across Washington . Please keep those signatures coming.
State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest
--Gary Fredricks, WSU Extension Dairy Educator
In 2007, the Washington 4-H State Dairy Judging team members were selected at the qualifying contest held in Stanwood on April 28, 2007. This allows the state team to have several months to prepare for the national contest. The event held in April was well done. Congratulations to Ann Marie Magnochi and Katie Hilt for their efforts in organizing this high quality contest!
Since then concerns have been voiced supporting conducting the contest at the State 4-H Fair, as well as allowing the selected Washington 4-H Dairy Judging team adequate time to prepare for the national competition. For this reason the Washington 4-H Dairy Judging Team, competing at the 2008 National Dairy Judging Contest, will be selected at State 4-H Fair in Puyallup on September 8, 2007.
All 4-H'ers enrolled in the Dairy Cow project are encouraged to attend the contest at State 4-H Fair on September 8th. There is no limit to the number of 4-H youth that can attend from each county. This contest will be conducted similarly to past 4-H State Dairy Judging Contests.
It is important to note that any Intermediate 4-H member wishing to qualify for the 2008 State Dairy Judging Team must judge in the Senior division.
f you have any questions, please direct them to Gary Fredricks, by phone at 360-577-3014, Ext. 3, or email garyf@wsu.edu.
