Explore the Horse-Human Relationship
--Jo Belasco
The Horse Project at Tapestry Institute is sponsoring a conference entitled “The Voice of the Horse” this summer that is the first horse event to explore the horse-human relationship. We have top horse professionals doing presentations, an online art exhibit and an acoustic "Horse Legends" concert by Michael Martin Murphey ("Wildfire"). The conference is being held at Iowa State University, June 30 and July 1. Available to everyone is a live webstreaming of the conference that weekend, and we will have an archived stream of the conference available for registrants until August 31, 2007. The online registration is $35.00.
Peter Stone of Stone Horse Models has given us funding for 10 scholarships for 4-H youth involved in equine activities to attend the conference online. These scholarships are for online participation, which means the winners will be able to watch the conference all summer, as often as they like. They will also be able to share their stories of the horse-human relationship with presenters that weekend via an online discussion component of the conference. Because of the late date, 4-Hers interested in the scholarship need to email me and prove they are involved in 4-H horse activities.
The website for the conference is located at http://www.thevoiceofthehorse.com; my website is at http://www.tapestryinstitute.org. Please let me know if you have any questions about the conference or Tapestry.
Resident Camp Risk Management
--Jana S. Ferris
Visit http://wvutoday.wvu.edu/news/page/5821/ for a news release that illustrates the importance of being prepared for a potential disease outbreak at a summer 4-H camp.
A 14-year-old camper at Jackson 's Mill State 4-H Camp was diagnosed with spinal meningitis ......fortunately it was the less severe viral form of the disease. The more serious bacterial meningitis is also more contagious. This incident, although not as serious as it could have been, underlines the importance of having contingency plans to respond to this type of "disaster" on a timely basis.
The 4-H Alert, Evacuate and Shelter Project
--Susan Emmons
Given recent natural disasters several states have focused their attention to creating the 4-H Alert, Evacuate and Shelter Project. The national 4-H mission is to empower youth to reach their full potential by working and learning in partnership with caring adults, and fostering opportunities for community engagement and service projects. As powerful members of their society, youth can partner with community decision-makers to affect positive change. The Alert, Evacuate and Shelter project will enable 4-H, their families and their community's to experience the geography of their local communities while helping their local emergency officials develop and build comprehensive emergency plans and maps for situations when citizens may need to be alerted, quickly evacuated, and sheltered during an emergency. The AES program focuses on keeping communities safe that are located in hurricane ridden areas through the creation of evacuation and shelter maps and through the use of advanced geospatial technologies. AES encourages 4-H youth to use their acquired leadership skills to educate their communities and to provide assistance, and direction, to their community leaders on the safe evacuation and shelter of local citizens during a hurricane.
The paragraph above is the Alert, Evacuate and Shelter's (AES) Mission Statement. They have successfully completed our first training at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia on May 13-15, 2007. They are currently finalizing their second training to be held on the campus of University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. If you'd like more information you can check out otheir website (noted below) and pass the word about our project.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT IN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL The third and final brief in our "Family Involvement Makes a Difference" series synthesizes research studies that link family involvement in middle and high school to youth's academic and social outcomes. This brief, entitled, "Family Involvement in Middle and High School Students' Education," profiles evaluated programs to show what works to promote family involvement and student achievement during this critical developmental period. The brief also highlights how you can use this research to promote effective policies and practices.
