4-H Mobile Continues to Make Progress
--Pat BoyEs

With the King County Fair kicking off the fair season this week, I was inspired to remind you to step up your efforts for 4-H license plate signatures. From now through October, somewhere in the state, you will see the year long learning efforts of 4-H members on display and earning their well deserved recognition. While people are looking at displays that reflect the impact the 4-H Youth Development Program has on the young people of Washington would be a perfect opportunity to collect signatures in support of our 4-H license plate.

We currently have collected 1188 signatures which puts us nearly a third of the way to our goal of 3500 signatures to Olympia by September 1st!  Be sure to plan a 4-H license plate signature area and remember to use the terrific displays created by Tony Dell for your use. Each district has two ready-made displays and with a little cooperation from your district colleagues in shuffling the displays around every fair can have a 4-H license plate display.

We have several counties edging up to the '100-Club' -- where Lincoln and Klickitat are basking and their Leader's Council's have already received there $100 checks for 100 signatures. Pierce, Snohomish, Grant and Clark are on the cusp of success. Remember that the county who secures the most signatures will receive $500! Right now Klickitat is leading that race with 155 signatures!

I urge all of you to make ensuring the future financial security of 4-H by getting behind the 4-H license plate project and making it top priority to gain the needed signatures! For additional information please contact Tony Dell at adell@wsu.edu. Check out the 4-H website for more information and signature sheets at http://4h.wsu.edu/foundation/licenseplate.htm.

2007 International Exchange Program

Congratulations, and a big bouquet of Clovers to all counties that participated in the Washington 2007 International Exchange Program (our 35th year!) of 29 youth delegates and 4 chaperones.

Many of these summer delegates will be at their local county fairs--please take a couple of minutes and introduce yourself to these delightful young people.

Year Long Delegates for 2007-2008 school year:

Each of these delegates will be participating in 4-H activities in the coming year. They will be attending the 2007 4-H Forum in Pasco, October 19-21 and at the 2008 4-H Know Your Government Conference, February 16-19, 2008 in Olympia.

Timely Registration for NAE4-HA and Evaluation Workshops Will Save You $$$
--Gary Varrella

We are encouraging everyone to take advantage of the savings by registering soon for NAE4-HA. We would also like to call your attention to the outstanding pre-conference workshops being offered.

The NAE4-HA Research and Evaluation Committee is pleased to announce a special pre-conference set of workshops to the 2007 NAE4-HA Annual Conference, October 21-25, in Atlanta. Participants will develop and advance their skills in using program evaluation for program improvement and impact reporting. This pre-conference has two concurrent tracks.

Track One – $75
Evaluation at the Local Level: Where to Start, What to Do!
Sunday, October 21, 2007
8am - 5pm

Track One targets the more fundamental aspects of evaluation in 4-H youth development programs. This track will be especially useful to newer members and to those wishing to develop more consistent patterns of evaluation related to their job assignments. This all-day workshop will develop and advance the participants' skills in select cornerstones of evaluation related to the “design,” the “doing,” and the “write-up,” referenced to the logic model. The workshop will emphasize a hands-on, cooperative learning approach. Each participant will receive a package of materials, articles, and samples.

Track Two – $85
Building Greater Evaluation Capacity
Sunday, October 21, 2007
8am  - 5pm

The second track will be for NAE4-HA members who have a more advanced level of knowledge and skills in program evaluation. The Track Two workshop will focus on practical, applied solutions to program evaluation problems, focusing on more advanced and complex techniques and statistical considerations, including:

NAE4-HA Urban 4-H Programming Task Force Survey for Directory of Successful Urban 4-H Programs
--Ellen Butler

The Urban Directory is here! For some great programming ideas visit:  http://www.colorado4h.org/urbanprogram/. There are 22 successful 4-H program ideas on this site - and they are not just for the urban audience!  We encourage you to take a look and think about submitting your program idea for 2007. In 2006 the Programs Committee of NAE4-HA formed a task force to address issues related to urban 4-H programming. One of the first undertakings of this task force was to compile a directory of successful 4-H programming efforts conducted in the urban environment. In the first year of our urban task force efforts we received 42 submissions, of which 22 were selected by peer review to be included in the directory. To view these go to:  http://www.colorado4h.org/urbanprogram/.

This survey will serve as the mechanism to gather further information to add to our directory. The Urban Programs Task Force will present a board-sponsored seminar to unveil the finished directory of successful programs at the October 2007 NAE4-HA annual meeting in Atlanta, GA. In order to encourage submission to this directory, the top 10 entries evaluated as the most innovative programs with significant impact will be recognized at the 2007 NAE4-HA annual meeting. In addition, the top submission from each region will be asked to present a 15-minute overview at the board sponsored seminar.

To aid in the compilation of a directory with a uniform format, please do not alter the font size and space allowed for your responses in the accompanying document. Please submit your entry for the Directory of Successful Urban 4-H Programs to: Ellen Butler Colorado State 4-H Office Ellen.Butler@Colostate.edu or phone: 970-491-1152.

Biosecurity for Birds Coloring Books Available

USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is working with 4-H to educate young backyard poultry owners about what they can do to protect their birds from diseases such as avian influenza (AI).  As part of its Biosecurity for Birds campaign, APHIS has produced an informative and engaging coloring book about the steps kids can take to keep their birds healthy.  It is perfect for elementary school-aged children.

These coloring books are free to 4-H clubs.  In order to keep things simple logistically, APHIS would prefer to bulk-ship the coloring books to 4-H leaders at the state level, for the state 4-H offices to distribute to local clubs or fairs.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Madelaine Fletcher from APHIS at birdbiosecurity@aphis.usda.gov for details.  Supplies are limited, and orders will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
