Helping Youth Respond to Media Requests for Personal Information
--Pat BoyEs and Sue Lerner

While much of Washington State was in the midst of drippy skies and soggy arenas last week the fair season was kicked-off with both the King County Fair and the Castle Rock Community Fair.  Of course fairs are public events where we are proud to showcase the achievements of our terrific 4-H members and the volunteers who work so hard to support their efforts. I am always the first to crow and preen when we are fortunate enough to receive media coverage of our 4-H activities. We must keep in mind however, that fairs as public events have the potential to attract all sorts of people. Sue Lerner in King County had a situation arise with the media that required her intervention.

Volunteers noted an individual taking pictures of youth and asking for personal information like their names and home towns. Very appropriately the volunteers requested to see the individuals press credentials. When the photographer refused to show credentials the volunteers called for security. When security responded the photographer did produce his press credentials and they were verified and he was found to indeed be a legitimate member of the media sent out to the fairgrounds from a major urban paper to cover the fair. I applaud the volunteers for their vigilance and they did exactly what they needed to do. Sue has since followed up with the newspaper editor and he too supported the action taken by the volunteers.

Of course, the best situation for us is when a member of the media alerts fair management that they will be taking photos and or interviewing participants and have them escorted abound the fairgrounds. However, in a far from perfect world that kind of protocol isn't always possible to establish. Sue has written an excellent letter to her fair participants on media safety that I thought you might appreciate reviewing. With most of you facing public activities and events in the months ahead please feel free to share this information with your volunteers and 4-H families. Sue has given us her permission to share her excellent suggestions.

Again, please allow me to state that we want and greatly benefit from positive media coverage, particularly media coverage that shows the positive impacts of a 4-H member's year long learning efforts that are displayed in a fair setting.  However, we need to be vigilant in our protection of young people who may have a tendency to be too trusting of anyone with a camera.

The Quality of School-Age Child Care in After-School Settings

Growing evidence tells us that quality after school programs can make a difference in children's lives. But what defines quality in after school settings? This brief by HFRP's Priscilla Little offers an overview of the features of high-quality after school settings, including an examination of key research on links between program quality and developmental outcomes. The brief, published by Child Care & Early Education Research Connections, also reviews current practice in program quality assessment, and a set of quality-related considerations for policymakers. You can read it online at: http://www.researchconnections.org/location/ccrca12576.
