Tufts' 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development Promotion Commences October 11, 2007
--Laura Phillips Garner
I am pleased to announce that promotion of the Tufts' 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development (PYD)—the first-ever longitudinal study to actually measure the characteristics of positive youth development—will launch October 11 to coincide with Tufts' 4-H Study of PYD Director Dr. Richard M. Lerner's appearance on ABC television's Good Morning America that morning to promote his new book, The Good Teen. A national news release touting the Tufts' 4-H Study of PYD also will be released via newswire that day.
The National 4-H Council Marketing & Communications Team, in partnership with Vanguard Communications in Washington, D.C., have created a promotional toolkit to prepare and support 4-H staff, 4-H volunteers and 4-H members. We hope that you will use these resources to share the findings of the Tufts' 4-H Study of PYD with stakeholders in your communities. The toolkit is available at www.4hbrandnetwork.org/apply/kitstufts.org and includes:
- internal messages worksheets for external audiences, families, funders and policy makers;
- customizable press release, public service announcements, PowerPoint presentation, drop-in article, flyer and form letter; a tip sheet for growing healthier, happier teens;
- 4-H Insights handouts that focus on civic engagement and contribution; and
- a four-color graphic that illustrates that youth in 4-H clubs are 41 percent more likely to contribute to themselves, their families and their communities, compared to youth in other activities (28 percent) or no activities at all (17 percent).
- a how-to package with tips on how to use the items in the promotional kit.
The National 4-H Council Marketing & Communications Team will:
- keep you abreast of Dr. Lerner's appearances in print and on radio and television as news of the study rolls out;
- provide these updates through e-mails like this one, information on 4-hbrandnetwork.org and articles in Clover Corner News, 4-H's national online newsletter (sign up by clicking on the Clover Corner News icon at www.fourhcouncil.edu);
- contact you to announce publication of the written report of the first four years of the longitudinal study when it is delivered by Dr. Lerner and Tufts.
We hope that you will tell us about your successes and best practices around sharing the results of the Tufts' 4-H Study of PYD with stakeholders by using the “Tell Us” feature on www.4-hbrandnetwork.org or contacting Laura Phillips Garner at lgarner@fourhcouncil.edu.
Two learning opportunities about promoting the Tufts' 4-H Study of PYD will be available. We encourage those attending the 2007 NAE4-HA Conference in Atlanta to join me for a “4-H Makes a Difference: Using the Tufts' 4-H Study to Promote 4-H” from 1:30-3 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2007. Please check your conference program for room details. Also, stay tuned for details on a later Breeze session covering this topic for those who were not able to join me at NAE4-HA or who want another opportunity to review the Tufts' 4-H Study findings, what tools are available to promote them and how to share that information with stakeholders to underscore the value of positive youth development and 4-H.
I would be remiss if I did not remind you that your State 4-H Programs can still get youth involved in the Tufts' 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development. State 4-H Programs that want to take part in the study can contact Jo Turner at TurnerLJ@missouri.edu or 573-884-5112 for more information.
Please look out for more information about the Tufts' 4-H Study of PYD in the coming weeks through e-mails, Clover Corner News and at www.4-hbrandnetwork.org. Questions about promotion of the Tufts' 4-H Study by the 4-H System are welcome and can be directed to me at lgarner@fourhcouncil.edu.
