Formation of New State Project Development Team
--Jerry Newman and Jean Swift

There is an increased interest in creating a project for small animals other than those already apart of the Washington State 4-H program, such as small mammals, reptiles, birds and fish.  Several counties have already implemented this at the county level.  We would like to put together a statewide project development committee.  To start this we need the following information:

Which counties are doing this?  There are many different versions.  Some counties are doing a single project such as rats, birds or hedgehogs.  Other counties include several animals under a title such as pocket pets, exotic pets, critter pals or small pets.  Could we please hear from those counties?

What are you using for project materials?  Would you be willing to send a copy to the committee?

Do you exhibit them at your county fair?  May we have a copy of your fair premium list?

Could we have the name, address, phone number(s) and email address for the person(s) working with that project so we may contact them for more information?  Would that person be willing to work on the project development committee?

Please send the information to Jean Swift by email at jjswift@verizon.net.  Project materials and/or fair premium lists may be mailed to Jean Swift, 11309 Galbreath Road Burlington WA 98233.  If you have any questions contact Jean at 360-757-4491 or 360-540-4491 (cell phone).

Wonders of Washington Program Assistants

Do you know a collegiate 4-H'er who has a passion for government, history, political science, working with youth, public speaking, or leadership? If you do, encourage them to apply for the position of Program Assistant (PA) at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center! They will be given the opportunity to spend their spring semester in Washington , D.C. , touching the lives of hundreds of high school-aged students from all over the United States while working for our Wonders of Washington (WOW) program.

The WOW program, offered at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD, gives young people the chance to explore, develop, and refine the skills necessary to become outstanding citizens and leaders in their home communities. Using the living classroom of Washington , D.C. , youth will learn about the history of our nation, various leaders who have shaped this nation, and how they can put their skills of leadership and citizenship into use when they return home.

As Program Assistants, Collegiate 4-H'ers will have opportunities to create and facilitate workshops for use with groups who participate in the WOW program, act as a liaison between the National 4-H Youth Conference Center and various school groups, and serve as a role model for the students who participate in the WOW program. They will also receive professional development through interaction with various departments of National 4-H Council to develop their professional skills.  If college students are interested in receiving internship credit, National 4-H Council will happily work with the individual and their school to make this possible.

We are looking for individuals with at least a high school diploma (preferably some or continuing college experience) and an interest or passion for youth development, hospitality, teaching, history, politics, or leadership. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please have them visit our website (http://www.wowwashington.org/programassistant.aspx). The application deadline is December 1, and selected candidates will begin work in early February.  The internship runs through the end of May.
