December 1 Deadline: State Advisory Board and Fair Board Applications

Vacancies on the State Advisory Board and State 4-H Fair Board will be filled during December.  Applications to fill the vacant positions must be post-marked by December 1, 2007.  These vacancies are open to enrolled 4-H Volunteers from any District.  Currently there are openings on the Advisory Board in the Northeast and Southwest Districts and an opening on the Fair Board in the Northwest District.

December 1 Deadline: 2008 WRLF Early Bird Registration

“Stampede to Idaho” is the theme of the 2008 Western Regional Leaders Forum (WRLF) in Boise, Idaho, March 6-9, 2008.  Exciting things have been planned for pre-forum and educational tours, workshops and speakers.  Go to the Washington State 4-H Homepage, http://4h.wsu.edu/, to click on the link to the Idaho 4-H website for more information. Register online or print and mail.  You can pay with a credit card or check!

Registration is $199 for early bird December 1, 2007; $240 by January 15, 2008 or $270 by February 15, 2008.


December 15 Deadline: Art of Leadership Program Registration

Join your colleagues for the 2008 4-H Art of Leadership program as part of the Current and Emerging Leadership Initiative in 4-H.  The deadline for receiving registrations is December 15, 2007.  This professional development opportunity is expressly for

The 4-H Art of Leadership program will give you an opportunity to reflect on your role as a leader in one of the largest youth development organizations in the U.S.   You will asses your leadership skills and behaviors, and discover your role in 4-H not just today but into the future.  This session will give you a rare opportunity: to personally reflect on your leadership and how you, together with other 4-H colleagues, can have an impact on the 4-H youth development system. 

This inspiring-and fun-series will give you a fresh perspective and renewed energy for your work and the future of 4-H.  Beginning in 2007, previous Art of Leadership participants will be eligible to apply and be selected to lead the program in the future. 

You will leave the 4-H Art of Leadership program with:

Length of Sessions:  Session One begins on Tuesday morning and ends at Thursday noon.  Session Two begins on Monday morning and ends at Thursday noon.

September 8-11, 2008 Burlington, VT.   Inn at Essex : http://www.vtculinaryresort.com/

Costs:   Registration for the Art of leadership is $425 per person for each of the two sessions (total of $850).  Estimated expenses for personal travel, lodging, pre-and post meeting travel meals, and incidentals per session are $1,200 per session or $2,400 for both sessions (over two fiscal years).

Resources for Reporting Child Abuse or Neglect

Go to the Washington State Department of Social & Health Services website, http://www1.dshs.wa.gov/ca/safety/abuseReport.asp, for information on how to report child abuse and neglect.  You can view/download the brochure “Protecting the Abused and Neglected Child.”

You can also view/download a 23-minute Mandatory Reporter's Video that provides guidance for those who are required by Washington State law to report child abuse or neglect. This video replaces the Canadian video you have been sharing “Put the Child First.” Please share these resources with appropriate groups.

Tufts University Professor Dr. Rich Lerner appeared on Boston's Fox 25 morning news Wednesday morning promoting his book, “The Good Teen” and The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development. Youth Initiatives Update from the National Clearinghouse on Families & Youth

The National Clearinghouse on Families & Youth is a free information service of the HHS/ACF Family and Youth Services Bureau. The Youth Initiatives Update is a monthly compilation of information on new youth-related initiatives and resources selected from the Web sites of more than 100 Federal agencies and national organizations.

Current Funding Opportunities (Federal and Non-Federal) can be found by visiting http://www.ncfy.com/. Click on Youth Development, then under News and Funding click on Youth Initiatives Update and finally click November 2007. The funding opportunities are arranged in order of application due date.


Financing and Sustaining Youth Programs

The Finance Project is pleased to announce the Youth Programs Listserv (YPL), a newsletter for program developers, policymakers, researchers and funders that will provide information, tools and other resources to help youth programs and initiatives finance and sustain their work. 

The YPL features recent publications and resources from The Finance Project's four practice groups—children and family services, vulnerable children and youth, education reform, and economic success for families and communities.  It also highlights promising practices from organizations, intermediaries and initiatives around the country using a range of financing strategies for sustainability.

Just a Reminder!

When you have new Extension staff that will be working in some capacity with 4-H, please let Nancy in the State 4-H Office know. They will be added to mailing lists, added to the 4-H Talk list serve, sent a 4-H Welcome Packet, and be assigned a state 4-H staff person as a point of contact, as appropriate. 4-H News is sent via the 4-H Talk list serve each week. Archived copies of previous weeks “Tuesday 4-H News” are available on the 4-H web site: http://4h.wsu.edu/.
