Remembering Judy Koesel

Judy Koesel was a friend to and inspiration for Spokane County 4-H youth and adults. She served on the Deer Park Fair Association Board for many years and was the current Secretary/Treasurer of the fair at Clayton. Judy served as the Superintendent of Clothing/Sewing at the Deer Park  and Clayton Fair for many years and also worked in that same department at the Spokane County Interstate Fair.  Judy was named a Spokane County Outstanding 4-H Volunteer in 1995, and was honored as the Washington State 4-H Volunteer of the Year in 2002. Through her many years of volunteer work Judy Koesel positively affected thousands of youth and adults in Spokane County, serving as a true model of how to make the best better. She will live in our memories leaving many happy thoughts and good times.

Cards of sympathy regarding Judy's death may be sent to Dean Koesel (Judy's brother) and their family at 32925 N Findley Road - Deer Park WA 99006.  Tentative funeral plans are Saturday, January 19, 2008 - 11:00 AM, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 3720 E Colbert Road - Colbert WA 99005, 509-466-4991.

How Would You Power Your Future?

Students' answers to that question could win them and your school thousands of dollars in rewards in a competition called Imagine Tomorrow. Exclusively for high school students, the competition debuts May 9-11, 2008. This competition will demonstrate to our future leaders the importance of civic engagement, while underscoring the intrinsic power of their own ideas and actions.

Under the advisement of a school mentor, student teams will present their best ideas to address the world's growing energy problems. Whether their strongest subjects are science, social studies, business, engineering, or the arts, there is a challenge category for them. Students may choose to tackle the challenges from one aspect, or bring together a range of ideas to offer their solution in a multi-disciplinary format. The range of solutions is limited only by their imaginations.

Student teams and their advisor will travel to the Washington State University campus in Pullman where they'll be fully hosted and given the opportunity to tour research labs. They will present their project before a panel of judges that includes top University faculty, as well as business and opinion leaders from throughout the state.  Students and advisors will join the distinguished judges and fellow competitors at a spectacular awards banquet.  Highlighting the evening will be a keynote speech from a man named one of Time magazine's "Heroes of the Planet:" Mr. Denis Hayes, board chair of the International Earth Day Network, President of the Bullitt Foundation, and former director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Take the next step. Imagine Tomorrow.  We have made a flier available to download from the website.

4-H Night with Trailblazers
--Sara Miller, Oregon State University 4-H Youth Development

There are a limited number of tickets available for 4-H groups wanting to get tickets for the February 24, 2008 Portland Trailblazers verses Boston Celtics game. Tickets have been moved in all price levels.  You can no longer purchase tickets by mail or phone, only online at http://tickets.trailblazers.com/deals, password is 4HNIGHT.

We will be on the lookout for the best and most spirited combination of 4-H and Blazer wear at the game. I didn't think about team colors when scheduling the Trailblazer night, just about making sure it was a great game.  We are playing the Boston Celtics whose colors are green and white and have a three leaf clover as one of their symbols, oops! Let's do our best to show our support for 4-H and the Portland Trailblazers.

Initial Launch of National 4-H Directory of Materials

One of the priority outcomes of last June's National 4-H Curriculum Summit was a recommendation that we create a National Directory of 4-H Educational Materials.

This directory is a searchable national database directory of 4-H educational materials currently available throughout the Cooperative Extension System.  It will include National 4-H curriculum, state curriculum, supplementary materials and guides all created within the land grant university system and intended either for a youth audience or for adults working with youth.  This directory will be a tremendous asset to all of us working within 4-H.

I am pleased to announce that the Directory is now online in its initial launch state and can be accessed at www.4-hdirectory.org.

Our goal is to have the full launch on April 1, 2008, which will hopefully include materials from your state or program.  The instructions to submit materials to the directory will be sent in two weeks.  You may want to surf the site now to learn about the four categories of educational materials which we're using to sort within the directory and see how the database is set up.

Thanks to Nancy Schaff at National 4-H Council for her leadership of the team which worked on this directory- Thanks also to the New York 4-H Program at Cornell for sharing their state directory, which made creation of the national one much easier.  I'd also like to recognize the entire team for their efforts to move this along at the incredible rate which allows us to launch already:  Jim Kahler, Eddy Mentzer, Bob Ranson, Celeste Carmichael, Madonna Weese, Cheryl Newberry, Javiette Samuel, and Mindy Turner.

Please take a look at the new directory, and get ready to add your materials.  If you have questions about the new directory, please contact Nancy Schaff at nschaff@fourhcouncil.edu.
