Farewell Message from Jan Hiller

Katherine Graham, the late publisher of the Washington Post once said, “To love what you do and feel that it matters, how could anything be more fun!”  This aptly describes how I have felt during most of the 30+ years that I have worked in Extension 4-H. Thanks to so many of you who helped along the way. My interest and support in Extension programs will remain long after I retire the end of January. I wish you continued success in “Making the Best Better!” Keep that 4-H Clover growing!

4-H Community Pride Award Program
--Gayle Ashworth

The Washington State 4-H Foundation, with sponsorship from The Chevron Companies is proud to offer “The 4-H Community Pride Award Program.”

This program is designed to recognize and reward youth for efforts that create positive benefits in their community, regionally, or on a state or national level. Involvements to reward include projects where:

The Chevron sponsored 4-H Community Pride Award Program covers all 4-H community involvement projects, including community service, community development, and community pride efforts. A club does not need to have received a 4-H Community Pride grant sponsored by Chevron to be eligible.

Two opportunities for recognition are available. One 4-H club in each participating county unit will be selected to receive the Best (in-county) 4-H Community Pride Award. The Best Washington State 4-H Community Pride Award will be presented each year to the most outstanding Community Pride Program overall. This will include a special framed certificate, and a $200 cash award. Only 4-H clubs making application will be considered for awards. This award will be presented at the Know Your Government Breakfast With Your Legislator on February 19, 2008.

Please submit your applications to the Washington State 4-H Foundation. Additional detail is available on our website: www.4h.wsu.edu/foundation.

Come to this FREE Presentation for the Whole Family
--Robyn Adair

Thurston County 4-H has a FREE four-part event series coming up that starts January 31. The last Thursday of four consecutive months, starting January, will be a free two-hour evening of presentations, workshops, panels, and crafts as we show the public how one can "learn by doing" and exactly what the Hs of 4-H are. Each evening demonstrates one of the Hs, and how they are defined by the essential elements, starting with the Head. January 31st at 6:30 p.m., come out to the Dept. of Public Health and Social Services with your whole family to discover the actual process of learning and how it's affected by your emotions, your past experience, and your body, presented by Allen Olson, Dean of the Evergreen State College. Then, youth and adults will participate in a workshop on working through barriers, facilitated by Washington 4-H's own State Program Manager Kevin Wright. The evening will be a great mini training for 4-Hers, and it's certainly valid to home and work life. Thurston County 4-H teen leaders will be providing craft activities for those children too young to participate. Call Thurston County 4-H for information and to RSVP (360) 786-5445 x.7913, or email TC4H@co.thurston.wa.us.

Statewide 4-H Know Your Government Caucus
--Pat BoyEs

Tuesday, January 23 was a highpoint in our 4-H year. It was the 4-H Know Your Government Statewide Caucus. We were able to connect with 27 county delegations at 14 different locations around the state via our video system. Yes, it was live and real time! The delegations outlined the community issues they had identified and formed into planks and then presented these planks which will be heatedly debated at the upcoming 4-H Know Your Government Conference in Olympia. What a night -- great challenging ideas! Equally exciting was the introduction of the 19 candidates who are running for Governor of the 4-H Know Your Government Conference. They were well prepared and very articulate! Well done to all.

If you missed the broadcast or would like to view it again, please go to: http://eces.wsu.edu/video/stream.html.

Heartiest thanks to all who worked so very hard to put together such a successful Statewide 4-H Caucus! On to Olympia!

Listserv for 4-H Food Project Leaders
--Christy Price

The State 4-H Foods & Nutrition Team developed a listserv for 4-H Food Leaders last year. The intent of the listserv is to provide a forum for leaders to ask questions related to food projects and to provide resources on food and nutrition, and to support their work on food projects. The listserv is moderated by one of the State 4-H Foods & Nutrition Team, and there are guidelines for posting. There are currently 57 members.

We plan to survey the current listserv participants, as well as other Food & Nutrition leaders, to find out their expectations for the listserv, and solicit suggestions for topics and/or information that they would like to receive.

In an effort to keep the county office “in the loop,” we would like to have at least one 4-H program staff from each county join the list.  Please consider having one of your County 4-H program staff join the listserv so that the county office will receive information as the leaders receive it.
