4-H Challenge Portable Training at Twin Lakes Youth Camp

The WSU Colville Reservation- Ferry County Extension 4-H Challenge Program will be hosting a Portable Challenge Training from March 31 - April 2, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., at Twin Lakes in Inchelium, WA. Interested adults (must be screened upon application), 4-H teen leaders, 4-H club leaders and any adult that works with youth (church youth leaders, school counselors, prevention intervention specialists, etc.) can attend. Participants can gain valuable information from this training that can be used in classroom, boardroom, club, work and family settings. This training will be during spring break so 4-H teens and leaders may have a greater opportunity to attend. There will be dorms on site for attendees, but food will NOT be provided.
This three-day intensive program is designed to increase participants' knowledge about facilitating team building and leadership development activities. Learning will take place through information sessions, involvement in cooperative, challenge activities as both a participant and a facilitator, with opportunities for feedback, and group discussion. Topics to be covered include: selection and sequencing of appropriate activities based on group characteristics; stage of development, time, and resources; leading safe challenge activities; methods of facilitating inclusion, participation in activities, and successful debriefs; ‘what if' situations and question and answer sessions; and hot tips drawn from experience.
Participants are asked to arrange a volunteer payback agreement to 4-H Challenge or pay a $125 course fee.
2008 Mason County 4-H Dog Camp at Panhandle Lake 4-H Camp

Mason County is sponsoring a 4-H dog camp April 25 - April 27. The Dog Camp Committee is planning a fun filled educational weekend for 4-H dog project members. Classes include: showmanship, agility, arts and crafts, cooking and more. There will be plenty of food, friends and fun for everyone.
Cost is $55.00 per camper with or without a dog and $35 per chaperone. Camp is limited to 50 members. Early registration for Mason County members is good through March 24. Open enrollment to all other counties begins March 25. Registrations must be postmarked by April 7. Registration forms are available on the website at http://mason.wsu.edu.
Still Life Judges Training

Thurston County is sponsoring a still life judges training to be held in conjunction with the Westside Super School sponsored by the Washington State Fair Association on April 5, at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. Trainings will be offered for judges of 4-H Clothing & Textiles, Arts & Crafts, Photography, Educational Displays, and Public Presentations. Participants who complete the trainings will be included on the most current list of 4-H judges that superintendents may choose from for county fairs. Please share this information in your counties so that we may develop a large pool of qualified judges for our youth exhibitors. Registration is $15 which includes lunch. Volunteer Training Modules -- Available Online

The 4-H Volunteer Leader Training Modules have been designed as a tool for 4-H staff to use in training new leaders. The modules strive to:
- provide an overview of all aspects of 4-H,
- clarify the roles of all 4-H volunteers and staff, and
- stress the policies and laws that the 4-H program abides by.
The Volunteer Development Action Team (VDAT) is in the process of updating the modules. You will see a new look and updated content in some modules, and there are more improvements to come.
his week, I want to draw your attention to Module I: About 4-H. It gives a good overview of the 4-H program, highlighting the following information: Missions – Pledge/Motto – Colors/Emblem – Educational Philosophy – Youth Protection – Volunteer Application – Funding – Glossary of Terms. State 4-H Fair Board Welcomes New Members

The Washington State 4-H Fair Board is pleased to welcome two new trustees to the board. Dawnise Johnson (Pierce County) and Debbie Smith (Pacific County) have both been appointed to one-year at large terms on the board. In addition, Gena Royal ( Clallam County ) has been appointed as the WSU staff representative for a two-year term. These additions give the board a full 15 members who will plan and conduct the Washington State 4-H Fair in Puyallup, September 5-21.
WSU 4-H Teen Leadership Coordinator Honored by State Legislature

Washington State University State 4-H Teen Leadership Coordinator Jan Klein, was honored Wednesday by the Washington State Legislature as an Outstanding Civic Educator. Klein, who is from the Lincoln County town of Edwall, was recognized for her work with youth on the local, regional, state and national level.
The Legislature recognized Klein during the second annual Civic Education Day in Olympia . Jeri Thompson, former U.S. Secretary of Senate, and leadership from the Washington State House of Representatives and Senate joined civic education organizations from across the state in honoring 12 outstanding civic educators from Washington.
"Jan is the spark plug that has re-ignited our entire 4-H Citizenship program,” said Pat BoyEs, Washington State University 4-H Youth Development Director. “Her energy, drive and sheer force of will have built a strong coalition all across Washington for Civic Education and Engagement.”
Klein is responsible for teen programming and training at events throughout the state's 39 counties in addition to mentoring youth delegations at national events.
“4-H empowers youth to engage in leadership, citizenship and life skill development,” said Klein. “4-H teens see government as something within their reach citizens and that comes through understanding and practicing within the system.”
Klein was nominated for the award by Representative Bob Sump of the 7th legislative district.
"I am deeply grateful for the work that Jan and the 4-H Know Your Government program have done to educate and inspire the next generation of leaders. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting the students over the years and I am always impressed with their enthusiasm for participating in Washington's future,” said Sump.
Up for the Challenge Curriculum training

Perhaps a few of you have an interest in spending a few days in the Washington DC area in the late spring -- well -- here is a good reason!
“Up for the Challenge” curriculum training to be held on May 29 and 30. “Up for the Challenge” is the nutrition and fitness curriculum that was developed for the 4-H - US Army Project by a writing team composed of several campus and field faculty here at the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension for use by the Youth Centers on the US Army bases. We invite you and your community partners to join us for this training to begin to implement this program for youth across the states. For a preview of the curriculum, you can download it at the Maryland 4-H website http://www.maryland4h.org/. We will be giving bound copies of the curriculum to those who participate in the training.
The training is for 1½ days with a cost of only $50 for early birds (April 15). This fee includes 4 meals. You can also purchase the Resource kit for $375 which provides all of the essential materials needed to present the programs.

Programs of Distinction Training for those Interested in Applying for the 4-H Families Count Family Strengthening Awards

We will be offering a free on-line Breeze training on how to apply to become a Program of Distinction on March 17 from 2-3:30 p.m. EST for those individuals who are interested in applying for the 4-H Families Count: Family Strengthening Awards. Space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage groups to share one “seat” to allow others to participate. The training will cover the Programs of Distinction application and review process, as well as the application and review process for the 4-H Families Count Awards. Maria Arnold and I will be joined by Sharon Anderson and Gregg Tabachow from National 4-H Council and Lisa Dennis, County Extension Director, University of Maryland, Somerset County, and a 2007 4-H Families Count Award winner for Cyber Town . 4-H/Navy Youth Development Project Director Assignment

After discussions with State 4-H Military Liaisons and with other military partners recently, we decided to change our strategy for the Navy/4-H partnership program. Rather than starting with two 4-H youth development professionals in Liaison and Technology assignments, we are seeking one youth development professional to serve as Navy/4-H Youth Development Project Director. This highly qualified, experienced Extension youth development professional will have responsibility for development and implementation of the Navy/4-H Youth Development Project under direction of U.S. Navy HQ Child and Youth Programs (CYP) and National 4-H Headquarters. The Director will work with Navy CYP staff at Command and installation levels as well as with 4-H faculty at University and county levels to build relationships and collaborative programs for youth of Navy families. This individual will be stationed at Commander, Navy Installations Command HQ and will be part of the CYP team. Extensive travel is required, within and outside of the U.S. Applicants must be employed by a Land Grant University and must have the commitment of the State 4-H Leader and Extension administrators to subcontract with another university for this YDP assignment and to continue their Extension employment for the duration of the assignment.
