Youth Positions Available on the 4-H State Advisory Board
--Jan Klein
Teens, who have been in 4-H for several years, are looking for leadership opportunities beyond the county level. The youth positions on the 4-H State Advisory Board, offer the opportunity to use personal 4-H experience to build a better State 4-H program. Each year, youth positions are available from each district and I encourage you to personally invite high school teens to run for these positions.
What will they bring to the 4-H State Advisory Board?
- The youth voice and perspective.
- Creativity and energy.
What will they receive from the experience?
- An opportunity to partner with adults to provide input into 4-H program issues, and the State 4-H Forum.
- Exercise and development of their leadership skills.
- Expenses paid for travel to face to face meetings.
How do they apply?
- Submit an application, with requested signatures, to Jan Klein, State 4-H Teen Leadership Coordinator by October 1, 2008.
The application is at: http://4h.wsu.edu/volntr/sab/SABTeen.pdf. Once accepted, information will be sent on to the youth to prepare for the State Advisory Board youth elections held at each District Rally.

Auction
--Kevin Wright
Once again this year the State 4-H Forum will feature both live and silent auctions. The live auction will take place on Saturday evening, October 18, 2008.
Be sure to fill out the form completely and mail or email it to the Snohomish County Extension Office. DO NOT mail the auction item to Snohomish County - bring it with you to the Forum. The Auction Form can be found on the State Forum website: http://4h.wsu.edu/conferences/Forum/index.htm.
The auction is a great way to make money for your county 4-H program. The profits from the auction are divided between the 4-H entity that donated it and the State Advisory Board. More details about this division are on the donation form. Be sure to mail in your donation forms by September 30, 2008, so that your items may be included in the auction catalog.

Life Skills Evaluation System under Review by WSU Institutional Review Board
--Mary Katherine Deen
Periodically, the WSU Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews all projects that have been approved for Human Subjects use. Because the Life Skills Evaluation System is undergoing major revisions to include an evaluation tool for youth in grades 3 – 5, the current Life Skills System is under review. The IRB will be waiting until the revision is complete (targeted for sometime this fall) before giving us a Human Subjects approval.
What does this mean to you, the user? All users of the system are welcome to continue using the current system that you can find on line at: http://ext.wsu.edu/lifeskills/. However, the system is NOT currently approved by the IRB. Therefore, any data you collect can ONLY be used internally -- for improvement of the program that you evaluated or to share results with planning committees, funding sources or participants of the program. You may NOT share the results in a public forum, a journal article or other written sources.
Again, the current system is still useable. However, the evaluation results are strictly for internal use only (at this time). As soon as the new system is up and running and approved by the IRB there will be an announcement in the Tuesday News.
If you have questions, please contact Mary Katherine Deen at: mdeen@wsu.edu.

--Submitted by Pat BoyEs
On Saturday, October 4th at 10:00 am – 12pm, Paul Figueroa, www.PeaceEnforcement.com, will be providing his POSITIVE CHOICES WITH BULLIES Workshop for Young People.
One mom said: "Thank you so much! My son is doing great! Your workshop was the ONLY THING THAT WORKED!!! My son is no longer playing the victim!"
The workshop is a perfect solution for both the "bullied" and the "bully" as well.
Fun and Life-Changing Workshop for Young People Ages 7 to 11!
Call 206-418-3383 to register or register online at: http://econnect.ci.shoreline.wa.us/Activities/ActivitiesDetails.asp?ProcessWait=N&aid=88. Tuition is $40.00.
This workshop is especially right for your child IF he/she:
- Gets picked on / bullied frequently
- Seems to not know how to break the pattern
- They pick on others or struggle to handle their anger
This fun, powerful, positive learning experience incorporates games and effective concepts to help the "bully" find positive ways to release their anger. We also help the "bullied" learn to stand up, believe in themselves and say NO!

2008 Citizenship Washington Focus Update
--Donald T. Floyd, Jr.
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs
I am proud to share that 4-H's premier summer national youth conference, Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) finished its final week here at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. 1800 4-H'ers from over 30 states traveled to the Center to experience the living classroom of Washington , DC . While participating in CWF, 4-H'ers strengthen communication, leadership, and other citizenship skills on a national level; understand the importance of civic and social responsibilities as they relate to the development of better citizens and leaders; and exchange ideas, practice respect, and form friendships with other youth from diverse backgrounds.
Thanks to one of our college interns, CWF alumni, and Arizona 4-H'er, Craig Alameda, we have captured the excitement of CWF through video to share with you and others in the 4-H system. Visit: http://4hvideos.fourhcouncil.edu/CWF/CWFMarketingVideo.mov to view a CWF overview video which captures the essence of CWF--citizenship, leadership and fun!
You can also visit the CWF website at www.citizenshipwashingtonfocus.org to view different videos of each week of CWF 2008, see pictures, or to learn more about CWF. Use this information to show others in your community what a terrific opportunity CWF is for the youth in your state.
CWF 2009 is only 10 months away! Get your young people and your communities excited about this opportunity. Feel free to contact Molly Young, Director of Youth Opportunities at: myoung@4HCenter.org with any questions about how 4-H'ers from your state can take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Professional Volunteer Recruitment PSA's Available on 4-H Brand Network
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs
I am very excited to announce a new addition to the 4-H Volunteer Recruitment Toolkit available on the 4-H Brand Network. Professionally-voiced radio public service announcements have been added in three formats: an urban voice, a generic voice, and a Spanish translation. Each is 30 seconds long and includes background music. They are ready for you to download and work with your local radio station(s) to add a tagline with your contact information before broadcasting. These PSA's, along with templates for a brochure, bookmark, ads in various sizes, poster, and web banner, are available at:
http://www.4-hbrandnetwork.org/apply/kitsvolunteer.aspx.
The Volunteer Recruitment Toolkit has been funded by Monsanto but there is no mention of the company on the announcements or in the other templates.
We hope these will be useful as another resource to help you continue to recruit volunteers and engage more adults and youth in your 4-H program.
Just a Reminder!
When you have new Extension staff that will be working in some capacity with 4-H, please let Nancy in the State 4-H Office know. They will be added to mailing lists, added to the 4-H Talk list serve, sent a 4-H Welcome Packet, and be assigned a state 4-H staff person as a point of contact, as appropriate. 4-H News is sent via the 4-H Talk list serve each week. Archived copies of previous weeks “Tuesday 4-H News” are available on the 4-H web site: http://4h.wsu.edu/. Please send submissions by Friday of each week to Tiffany Boswell, State 4-H Office, tiffany_boswell@wsu.edu. Detailed event information and registrations forms can be found on the 4-H web site.
