National Youth Science Day
--Janet Edwards

On October 8, 2008 the 4-H Youth Development Program is launching the first annual 4-H National Youth Science Day to help build America 's future science, engineering, and technology workforce. The National Science Experiment, the designated science activity of 4-H National Youth Science Day, will focus on the environment and will use science principles to teach youth across the country about the importance of water conservation.

We encourage all counties to participate in this nationwide day by making plans to share the designated experiment with youth and families in your county.  The experiment is a fun exploration of hydrogels.  If possible, we hope you can work on making this a media event to get some exposure for our great 4-H programs in Washington. We will have all of the experiment supplies on hand for you at Program Days this month.

More details can be found at: http://www.4-h.org/ or from the WSU Extension 4-H website: http://4h.wsu.edu/index.htm and clicking on Technology Program then Science, Engineering & Technology. If you have questions, please contact Janet Edwards at: (509) 358-7867 or at: edwardsj@wsu.edu.

4-H Tail Docking Information from MD
--Sent in by Susan Kerr
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs

From www.sheepandgoat.com/news/PDF/fall2008.pdf

“The 2008 Maryland 4-H Tail Docking Policy, which sought voluntary compliance (i.e. tails were not officially measured), was largely a failure. Based on observations of lambs at various fairs, the majority of 4-H market lamb and breeding sheep exhibitors failed to comply with the policy. In other words, tail docks of many 4-H lambs were shorter than the 0.7 inch requirement.

Despite shorter tail docks, only a few lambs were disqualified from showing due to having rectal prolapses. The purpose of the 4-H tail docking policy is to minimize the occurrence of rectal prolapses in lambs. According to research published in the Journal of Animal Science, a short tail dock results in a 9-fold increase in the incidence of rectal prolapses, if lambs are fed concentrate diets, as is common with 4-H market lambs. Other factors which contribute to the incidence of rectal prolapses include sex, diet, genetics, exercise, coughing, and straining.

Exhibitors and breeders who complied with 2008Maryland 4-H Tail Docking Policy are to be commended for maintaining high ethical standards. There is no reason to dock lambs shorter than what the policy requires. In fact, lambs, especially ewe lambs that will be sold or kept for breeding, should be docked longer than the policy requires.

The 4-H tail docking policy will be re-evaluated at the end of 2008 by the Maryland Cooperative Extension4-H Animal Science Curriculum Committee.”

Breeds of Cattle, 2nd Edition - New Products
--Submitted by Pat BoyEs

Due to a large number of requests, we have developed two new Breeds of Cattle products we would like to introduce.

  1. 27” X 40” Breed Identification Charts (Set of Two)
Including 92 profile images of today's ideal bull and cow of approximately 45 breeds, hand picked by industry experts, the large format of 27” X 40” provides an excellent visual reference.
  2. Breeds of Cattle, 2nd Edition on CD-ROM
This CD-ROM (which is also included as part of the Educational Package offer) contains the entire Breeds of Cattle book in PDF format. This is a great resource for educational markets for overhead projection as well as those who wish to review the content and view the artwork on their computer.
