12th Place at Nationals in Kentucky

Who was the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby? In fox hunting, what does it mean when a fox "goes to ground"? How many bones are in the horse's skull? Those are just three of the many questions posed to teens during the Eastern National Roundup. Five delegates from Pierce County competed during the Horse Bowl competition November 6 - 8 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Months of preparation helped team members Sarah, Nicole, Chelsea, Brittany, and Anna with the wide array of questions during the event. Two contest rooms provided simultaneous action as 22 teams competed.
“The teams stayed in holding rooms until their game was called,” explained 4-H Pierce County Chaperone Ann Vonderau. “The topics included breed origins, riding disciplines, feeding, diseases, parasites, anatomy, etc.” Of the 31 questions in a game, twelve were one-on-one with the rest being open where anyone could buzz in. Points were kept for individuals and teams. Of the four games played the Pierce County team won two with the team captain, Sarah, placing 10th out of nearly 100 teens and the team coming in 12th overall.
After the competition the group took many tours including trips to the Adena Springs stallion/breeding facility, Churchill Downs, Hillcroft Farms and the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln.
