The benefits of Premarin, new opportunities for equines, and jockey lifestyles took center stage for Washington State
4-H’ers presenting at the 25th Eastern National Horse Roundup.
Thirteeen youth from our state competed at the November 6 event in Louisville, Kentucky. Teens took part in public speaking, individual presentation, team presentation, Horse Bowl, Hippology, and horse judging contests.
Pierce County 4-H’ers Tavia, Brittney, Nicole, and Sarah were among 330 of the nation’s knowledgeable horse program members who spent months ahead of time preparing for the competition. Sarah and Nicole placed 10th with their team presentation of jockey training and equipment.
“The skills the teens learn in preparing and presenting their ideas help them excel in school and beyond,” said Pierce County volunteer and chaperone Ann Vonderau. “Our youth went through preliminary and county judging before the competition at the state fair in Puyallup where they were selected to represent Washington at the national level.”
For the first time this year the top ten communication teams were recognized. Any state competing in at least two contests was eligible with members’ scores added together for final results. The Washington State team placed 8th.
In other events Horse Bowl team participants Allison, MacKenzie, Shannon, and Kira from Snohomish County, placed third. The Hippology team took 4th place overall featuring Snohomish County 4-H’ers Katie, Danielle, Miriam, and Maggie. The judging team placed 10th overall, of which Tara from King County was a member.
The annual event, begun in 1985, is hosted by the North American International Livestock Exposition.
