Turning Cranes into Dollars for Earthquake Relief

King County 4-H Club Joins International Effort to Raise Money for Japan

By Betsy Fradd, WSU Extension 4-H

Knowing how to help earthquake victims in Japan proved as simple as folding paper for a group of King County 4-H’ers. Youth from “A Book of Adventure” 4-H Club made over 100 cranes and gave them to the Bezoes Family Foundation which donated two dollars per crane to relief efforts in Japan.

“Our kids wanted to contribute and they know that being involved is important,” said 4-H leader Floy Ziegler. “Community is more than county or country, it is global since what happens in one area of the world can have an affect on other areas of the planet.”

4-H members gathered last month and spent two hours folding the red, white and blue cranes.  Their entries joined the one million cranes received from all 50 states and 37 countries. The cranes were turned over to the Bezoes Family Foundation which initially pledged to donate two dollars for each crane received up to 100,000 cranes.  The response was so great the Foundation doubled its contribution to $400,000.  An anonymous donor added another $100,000 totaling $500,000.

The money will go toward Architecture for Humanity's reconstruction efforts in conjunction with area designers and builders in Japan. The cranes will be featured in a future Japanese art exhibit.
