4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Full of Information, Fun for Washington State Delegation
By Betsy Fradd, WSU Extension 4-H

Looking at life through the eyes of the dairy industry is natural for a committed group of Washington State 4-H teens. Four youth and two adults traveled to Kentucky for the National Dairy Quiz Bowl armed with dairy statistics, facts, and anecdotes to impress the most seasoned judge.
Team members Andrea, Frank, Stephanie, and Katie were given issues of Hoard’s Dairymen to read and write study questions from before arriving at the North American International Livestock Exposition November 5 - 10 in Louisville, Kentucky.
“The contest began with each teen taking a written test and based on the results teams are place into brackets for the buzzer rounds the following day,” explained Lewis County Chaperone Carmen VanTuyl. “Each buzzer round is scored based on the number of correct answers, bonus questions, and then questions from the written exam are added in. It’s fascinating to watch.”
The group competed in two matches and, while they didn’t place, gained experience and knowledge that will serve them well in the future.
The team also spent time walking the aisles of the dairy barn talking with the breeders and looking at the cows – some of which were winners at the Dairy Expo in Wisconsin. Sightseeing trips included visits to a Shaker Village, the Louisville Zoo, and the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum.
