MadisonCommunity Service and Sustainability
Important to 4-H Teen

By Madison, 14, Klickitat County

They say it takes a village to raise a child.  The same can be said for a community. A community has to be nurtured before it can flourish. Before a community can raise a child, it must first stand on its own. In my community there are 3,000 citizens, and unemployment is on the rise, thus community is everything. Community service is important to me because it is nice to help a neighbor, and help the less fortunate, but there is a bigger picture. Helping one-person whether they appreciate it or not builds the community, and brings it one step closer to sustaining our future generation.

As a member of National Junior Honor Society, Evergreen 4-H, FFA and Peer Tutoring, I volunteer at community dinners and fund raisers including the Klickitat County Fair barbeque, food drives, the lamb-burger booth at the Central Washington Fair, fall clean up for the elderly and more. My current project is restoring a local historical fire lookout tower. In my spare time when not in school, sports and helping on the ranch, I educate groups about ranch life in rural Eastern Washington.

I love my community and would like to give back a fraction of what it has given me. The community has taught me the importance of caring for one another and helping each other through good and bad, while being a role model for future generations to build upon.
