4-H'ers Awarded Prestigious WSU Regents Scholarships
By Betsy Fradd, WSU Extension 4-H
It’s an academic scholarship that impacts lives for years to come. For 18 students involved in WSU Extension 4-H, their years of leadership, academic achievement and community service were recognized and rewarded with the WSU Regents Scholarship.
Taking top honors were Erin Ranney of Shelton, Ritzville’s Michelle Slate, and Jeffrey Ladderrud of Walla Walla. As three of the top 25 Distinguished Regents Scholars they will each receive four-year scholarships worth over $60,000.
Ladderud credits his involvement in 4-H projects and leadership involvement for much of his success.
“My eight years of raising pigs has endowed me with a sense of duty and responsibility not only for my own project, but for the interests of my fellow club members as well,” said Ladderud. “It has taught me patience in dealing with those less experienced and has provided innumerable opportunities to develop my leadership capabilities. Because of 4-H I am able to deal more professionally with both adults and children, yet it also provides occasions to have fun.”
Ladderud plans on studying math and/or science with a career possibly in geology or physics.
The Regents Scholars program is open to high school juniors and participating Native America tribes. Other 4-H members receiving scholarships were Valerie Bachand, Tacoma; Caylin Cordray, Montesano; Rachel Huesby, Touchet; Melissa Juhnke, Reardan; Madison Keezer, Kalama; Miranda Moses, Davenport; Luke Renaud, Enumclaw; Megan Rosenbach, Montesano; Jessica Schmidt, Othello; Melissa Steinkamp, Auburn; Hannah Swigart, Goldendale; Leslie Williams, Pomeroy; Emily Wooley, Snoqualmie; Nicole Young, Burlington, and Scott Zediker, Prosser.
