Ideas for Reaching Volunteers with Training
Training Trainers to Teach (T3) is a national curriculum of lesson plans that are contained in two large white notebooks. The purpose of T3 is to enhance the teaching capabilities of salaried and volunteer staff. What to say, what to do, what to show, things learners will do, the order for doing things, and hints for the trainers are in an easy-to-follow format. Experiential learning is the core of the T3 curriculum. People learn best through what they experience and do. When they process and think about it, reflect on its meaning in the real world and apply it to practical situations, it becomes a part of themselves. The T3 curriculum leads people through these important processes. These 14 topics are addressed:
- You, the Trainer
- Presentation Skills
- Audience Needs Assessment
- Adults as Learners
- Young People as Learners
- The Learning Process
- Learning Styles
- Teaching Others
- Mentoring
- Simple Visuals

- TAXI (Taking Anybody into eXpanded Involvement) is
a curriculum of 9 different workbooks, training guides
and assessment tools for nine different stages of
volunteer system development. The purpose of TAXI
is to assist in the creation of local volunteer
management systems and to involve both salaried
and volunteer staff in accomplishing things through volunteer managers. In 4-H youth development, volunteer program managers support volunteers working with clubs, school enrichment programs, special interest groups, childcare programs, neighborhood center projects, out of school time programs, and community action programs and efforts to impact public policies affecting healthy youth development. Every county Extension office may have a TAXI “garage” with these tools to train volunteers for middle management roles. Extra copies may be obtained from Kevin Wright, WSU-Puyallup or Jim Lindstrom, Professional Development Office, Spokane.Example portion of Red Taxi (pg. 16-18)
