Question of the month

Why Do You Volunteer With 4-H?

Jim Luty

Jim Luty, president King County 4-H Horse Program

I learned at a young age what a positive influence an adult can have on youth. When I was 11and at Boy Scout Camp my father passed away from a heart attack. While this was a devastating time in my life I learned that I was not alone. My Scoutmaster and many others took it upon themselves to be there for me and made sure I had the support I needed which made growing up without my dad easier.  The only thing they asked of me is when I grew up and had kids was to get involved in a program and be a positive role model.

4-H has had a huge impact on my daughter’s life. She is a much more confident and assertive person because of it. So, it was an easy decision to become involved and try to ensure that every person who is involved in our program has a great experience.

I’ve been a 4-H volunteer for seven years.  Every day I am involved I get something positive out of it which makes it even easier to give back. My goal is always to try to make our programs both challenging and fun. A couple of my accomplishments that I am most proud of have been starting up a Working Rancher Program in King County and putting together our end of year Camp Out at the Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum. It is so much fun to watch a child accomplish things that they never imagined they could.
