TOTAL YOUTH PROJECT ENROLLMENT -- 149,266
4-H is Washington State University's dynamic, informal, educational program for today's young people. The program combines the cooperative efforts of youth, volunteer leaders, Washington State University faculty, Federal-State-Local governments, and business.
The mission is to assist you acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society. 4-H programs are conducted in all 39 counties.
YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 86,309 (unduplicated) youth participated in the Washington State Extension Youth Development Program for the 2000-2001 4-H year, a decrease of 7,224 from the previous year. Girls represented 56% (48,513) of the youth participants; 44% (37,796) were boys. A total of 100,113 youth (including duplicates) participated in one or more 4-H Youth Development programs, decreasing from the 2000 year-end duplicated total of 114,177.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 19,502 youth were members in 1,756 4-H Clubs; (‘99-'00: 20,309 members enrolled in 1,733 clubs).
- 42,466 youth were involved in 1,224 School Enrichment programs ('99-'00: 64,064 youth were involved in 1,455 School Enrichment groups).
- 35,158 youth were enrolled in 1,407 Special Interest, Short-Term and Day Camp groups ('99-'00: 24,033 youth were enrolled in 803 Special Interest groups).
- 1,488 youth participated in 38 School Age Child Care groups (‘99-’00: 1,457 youth participated in 53 SAC groups).
- 1,322 youth participated in 43 Overnight Camping programs ('99-'00: 1,141 youth participated in 43 Overnight Camps).
- 177 youth enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study (‘99-’00: 173 youths enrolled in Individual Study).
Total (unduplicated) youths represented the following Racial Ethnic Groups:
- 63,383 (73.4%) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 8,910 (10.3%) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race).
- 6,222 (7.2%) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 4,397(5.1%) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
- 3,397 (4%) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
Youth participants represented the following Residence distribution:
- 8% (6,841) live on farms.
- 25% (21,839) live in towns with populations under 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas.
- 39% (34,026) live in towns and cities with populations of 10,000-50,000.
- 5% (3,967) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000.
- 23% (19,636) live in central cities of over 50,000.
The distribution of youths by Grade/Division included:

- 32% (27,224) Juniors (3-5)
- 23% (20,130) Intermediates (6-8)
- 20% (16,858) Seniors (9-12)
- 2% (1,558) Post HS or Not in School
- 0% (321) Special Education
VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

9,474 adult volunteers were involved in 4-H Youth programs, a decrease of 839 over the previous year. Of these, 6,886 (73%) were women and 2,588 (27%) were men. 1,042 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Reported adult and youth volunteers totaled 10,516.
