YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 73,424 (unduplicated) youths participated in the Washington State 4-H Youth Development Program for the 2001-2002 4-H year. This total includes both individual and group enrollments and shows a decrease of 12,885 youths from the previous year. Girls represented 55% (40,533) of the youth participants; 45% (32,891) were boys. A total of 81,728 youths (including duplicates) participated in one or more 4-H Youth Development programs, decreasing from the 2001 year-end duplicated total of 100,113.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 20,254 were members in 1,767 4-H Clubs; (‘00-'01: 19,502 members enrolled in 1,756 clubs).
- 38,504 youths were involved in 1,490 School Enrichment groups ('00-'01: 42,466 youths involved in 1,224 School Enrichment groups).
- 19,408 youths were enrolled in 825 Special Interest, Short-Term, and Day Camp groups; ('00-'01: 35,158 youths were involved in 1,407 Special Interest groups).
- 1,958 youths participated in 51 School Age Care groups; (‘00-‘01: 1,488 youths participated in 38 SAC groups).
- 1,461 youths participated in 43 Overnight Camping programs; (‘00-'01: 1,322 youths participated in 43 Overnight Camps).
- 143 youths enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study; (‘00-'01: 177 youths enrolled in Individual Study).
Total (unduplicated) youths represented the following Racial Ethnic Groups:
- 55,802 (76%) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 8,077 (11%) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin).
- 4,405 (6%) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 2,937 (4%) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
- 2,203 (3%) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
Youth participants represented the following Residence distribution:
- 8.7% (6,395) live on farms;
- 29.4% (21,563) live in towns having a population less than 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas;
- 37.9% (27,812) live in towns and cities having a population of 10,000-50,000;
- 6.5% (4,753) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000;
- 17.5% (12,901) live in central cities of over 50,000.
The distribution of youths by Grade/Division included:
- 26.8% (19,672) Primaries (K-2)
- 34.1% (25,058) Juniors (3-5)
- 23.2% (17,019) Intermediates (6-8)
- 14.3% (10,479) Seniors (9-12)
- 1% (730) Post HS or Not in School
- 0.6% (466) Special Education
VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
- 4-H VOLUNTEERS
9,513 adult volunteers were involved in 4-H Youth Development programs, an increase of 39 over the previous year. Of these, 6,960 (73%) were women and 2,553 (27%) were men. 954 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Total reported adult and youth volunteers was 10,467. - 4-H VOLUNTEER TRAINING
2,149 adult volunteers and 918 youth volunteers were reported as participating in training at the county and state levels; 1,181 other adults (4-H professionals, non-volunteers, or adults from other organizations) were trained through 4-H programs.
