TOTAL YOUTH PROJECT ENROLLMENT -- 148,865
4-H is Washington State University's dynamic, informal, educational program for today's young people. The program combines the cooperative efforts of youth, volunteer leaders, Washington State University faculty, Federal-State-Local governments, and business.
The mission is to assist you acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society. 4-H programs are conducted in all 39 counties.
YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 78,789 (unduplicated) youths participated in the Washington State 4-H Youth Development Program for the 2002-2003 4-H year. This total includes both individual and group enrollments and shows an increase of 5,365 youths from the previous year. Girls represented 54% (42,683) of the youth participants; 46% (36,106) were boys. A total of 91,263 youths (including duplicates) participated in one or more Extension Youth Development programs, increasing from 81,728 the previous year.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 20,946 were members in 1,822 4-H Clubs; (‘01-'02: 20,254 members enrolled in 1,767 clubs).
- 53,141 youths were involved in 2,306 School Enrichment groups ('01-'02: 38,504 youths involved in 1,490 School Enrichment groups).
- 12,485 youths were enrolled in 433 Special Interest, Short-Term, and Day Camp groups; ('01-'02: 19,408 youths were involved in 825 Special Interest groups).
- 3,552 youths participated in 136 School Age Care groups; (‘01-‘02: 1,958 youths participated in 51 SAC groups).
- 906 youths participated in 28 Overnight Camping programs; (‘01-'02: 1,461 youths participated in 43 Overnight Camps).
- 233 youths enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study; (‘01-'02: 143 youths enrolled in Individual Study).
Total (unduplicated) youths represented the following Racial Ethnic Groups:
- 54,977 (70%) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 11,617 (15%) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin).
- 4,511 (6%) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
- 4,095 (5%) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 3,589 (4%) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
Youth participants represented the following Residence distribution:
- 8% -- (6,217) live on farms;
- 35% -- (27,166) live in towns having a population less than 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas;
- 32% -- (24,613) live in towns and cities having a population of 10,000-50,000;
- 6% -- (5,024) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000;
- 20% -- (15,769) live in central cities of over 50,000.
The distribution of youths by Grade/Division included:
- 30% (23,604) Primaries (K-2)
- 33% (26,180) Juniors (3-5)
- 23% (18,622) Intermediates (6-8)
- 12% (9,383) Seniors (9-12)
- 1% (490) Post HS or Not in School
- 1% (510) Special Education
VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
- VOLUNTEERS
9,286 adult volunteers were involved in Extension Youth Development programs, a decrease of 227 over the previous year. Of these, 6,984 (75%) were women and 2,302 (25%) were men. 976 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Total reported adult and youth volunteers was 10,262. - VOLUNTEER TRAINING
2,627 adult volunteers and 630 youth volunteers were reported as participating in training at the county and state levels; 284 other adults (4-H professionals, non-volunteers, or adults from other organizations) were trained through 4-H programs.

These totals include youth projects (with duplication, i.e., one youth often enrolls in more than one project) for both individual and group enrollments. Individual projects are noted where statistically significant (over 5,000).
