YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

A total of 75,475 (unduplicated) youth participated in the Washington State Extension Youth Development Program for the 2003-2004 4-H year, a decrease of 3,324 from the previous year. Girls represented 55% (41,361) of the youth participants; 45% (34,114) were boys. A total of 86,098 youth (including duplicates) participated in one or more Extension Youth Development programs, down from 91,263 the previous year.

In addition to youth programs traditionally led by WSU Extension 4-H professionals and volunteers, these statistics include youth served by EFNEP (Extension Family & Nutrition Education Program), Food $ense, Master Gardeners, and other Extension areas delivering youth programming.

Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):

  • 23,530 youth were members in 1,861 4-H Clubs; (‘02-'03: 20,946 members enrolled in 1,822 clubs). For the first time, club membership was reported in four categories:
    • 4-H Community Clubs (21,860 youth)
    • 4-H In-School Clubs (23 youth)
    • 4-H After-School Clubs (1,282 youth)
    • Military 4-H Clubs (365 youth)
  • 48,668 youth were involved in 1,977 School Enrichment programs ('02-'03: 53,141 youth were involved in 2,306 School Enrichment groups).
  • 10,107 youth were enrolled in 363 Special Interest, Short-Term groups ('02-'03: 12,485 youth were enrolled in 433 Special Interest, Short-Term, and Day Camp groups).
  • 2,241 youth participated in 86 4-H Camping programs; of these:
    • 4-H Overnight Camps (1,215 youth participated in 38 camps)
    • 4-H Day Camps (1,026 youth participated in 48 camps)
  • 1,281 youth participated in 37 School Age Child Care groups (‘02-’03: 3,552 youth participated in 136 SACC groups).
  • 271 youth enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study (‘02-’03: 233 youths enrolled in Individual Study).

 

Total (unduplicated) youths represented the following Racial Ethnic Groups:

  • 53,668 (70%) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
  • 9,586 (13%) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race).
  • 4,426 (6%) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
  • 3,545 (5%) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
  • 3,509 (5%) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
  • 741 (1%) Other combinations.

 

Youth participants represented the following Residence distribution:

  • 8% (5,953) live on farms.
  • 30% (22,805) live in towns with populations under 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas.
  • 33% (25,009) live in towns and cities with populations of 10,000-50,000.
  • 7% (5,174) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000.
  • 22% (16,534) live in central cities of over 50,000.

 

The distribution of youths by Grade/Division included:

  • 26% (19,431) Primaries (K-2)
  • 36% (27,090) Juniors (3-5)
  • 24% (18,017) Intermediates (6-8)
  • 12% (9,415) Seniors (9-12)
  • 1% (929) Post HS or Not in School
  • 1% (593) Special Education

 

VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

  • VOLUNTEERS
    8,307 adult volunteers were involved in Extension Youth programs, a decrease of 979 over the previous year. Of these, 6,341 (76%) were women and 1,966 (24%) were men. 983 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Reported adult and youth volunteers totaled 9,290.
  • VOLUNTEER TRAINING
    2,244 adult volunteers
    and 1,064 youth volunteers were reported as participating in training workshops at the county and state levels; 729 other adults (4-H professionals, non-volunteers, or adults from other organizations) were trained through 4-H programs.

These totals include youth projects (with duplication, i.e., one youth may enroll in more than one project) for both individual and group enrollments. Projects reflect a minimum of six hours of contact. Individual projects are noted where statistically significant (over 4,000).
