TOTAL YOUTH PROJECT ENROLLMENT -- 127,327
4-H is Washington State University's dynamic, informal, educational program for today's young people. The program combines the cooperative efforts of youth, volunteer leaders, Washington State University faculty, Federal-State-Local governments, and business. The mission is to assist you acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society. 4-H programs are conducted in all 39 counties.
YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 67,852 (unduplicated) youth participated in the Washington State Extension Youth Development Program for the 2003-2004 4-H year, a decrease of 7,623 from the previous year. Girls represented 56% (38,120) of the youth participants; 44% (29,732) were boys. A total of 71,523 youth (including duplicates) participated in one or more Extension Youth Development programs, down from 91,263 the previous year.
In addition to youth programs traditionally led by WSU Extension 4-H professionals and volunteers, these statistics include youth served by EFNEP (Extension Family & Nutrition Education Program), Food $ense, Master Gardeners, and other Extension areas delivering youth programming consisting of six or more ours of contact.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 21,742 youth were members in 1,719 4-H Clubs; (‘03-'04: 23,530 members enrolled in 1,861 clubs). Club membership was reported in four categories:
- 4-H Community Clubs (20,100 youth)
- 4-H In-School Clubs (61 youth)
- 4-H After-School Clubs (1,108 youth)
- Military 4-H Clubs (473 youth)
- 37,129 youth were involved in 1,254 School Enrichment programs ('03-'04: 48,668 youth were involved in 1,977 School Enrichment groups).
- 8,270 youth were enrolled in 253 Special Interest, Short-Term groups ('03-'04: 10,107 youth were enrolled in 363 Special Interest, Short-Term, and Day Camp groups).
- 3,086 youth ('03-'04: 2,241) participated in 68 4-H Camping programs ('03-'04: 86 Camps); of these:
- 4-H Overnight Camps (1,141 youth participated in 25 camps)
- 4-H Day Camps (1,945 youth participated in 43 camps)
- 1,051 youth participated in 31 School Age Child Care groups (‘03-’04: 1,281youth participated in 37 SACC groups).
- 245 youth enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study (‘03-’04: 271 youths enrolled in Individual Study).
Total (unduplicated) youths represented the following Racial Ethnic Groups:
- 3,965 (65%) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 8,081 (12%) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race).
- 7,217 (11%) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 4,816 (7%) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
- 2,754 (4%) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
- 1,019 (1%) Other combinations.
Youth participants represented the following Residence distribution:
- 8% (5,098) live on farms.
- 31% (21,341) live in towns with populations under 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas.
- 15% (10,095) live in towns and cities with populations of 10,000-50,000.
- 8% (5,210) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000.
- 38% (26,108) live in central cities of over 50,000.
The distribution of youths by Grade/Division included:
- 27% (18,196) Primaries (K-2)
- 33% (22,461) Juniors (3-5)
- 25% (16,901) Intermediates (6-8)
- 14% (9,524) Seniors (9-12)
- 1% (597) Post HS or Not in School
- 0% (173) Special Education
VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
- VOLUNTEERS
7,669 adult volunteers were involved in Extension Youth programs, a decrease of 638 over the previous year. Of these, 5,955 (78%) were women and 1,714 (22%) were men. 970 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Reported adult and youth volunteers totaled 8,639. - VOLUNTEER TRAINING
2,475 adult volunteers and 584 youth volunteers were reported as participating in training workshops at the county and state levels; 228 other adults (4-H professionals, non-volunteers, or adults from other organizations) were trained through 4-H programs.

These totals include youth projects (with duplication, i.e., one youth may enroll in more than one project) for both individual and group enrollments. Projects reflect a minimum of six hours of contact. Individual projects are noted where statistically significant (over 5,000).
