YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 79,678 (unduplicated) youth participated in the Washington State Extension Youth Development Program for the 2008-2009 4-H year, an increase in reported youth (+4,433) from the previous year. Girls represented 55% (43,724) of the youth participants; 45% (35,954) were boys. A total of 83,826 youth (including duplicates) participated in one or more WSU Extension Youth Development programs.
In addition to youth programs traditionally led by WSU Extension 4-H professionals and volunteers, these statistics include youth served by EFNEP (Extension Family & Nutrition Education Program), Food $ense, Master Gardeners, and other Extension areas delivering youth programming consisting of 6 or more hours of contact.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 22,310 youth were members in 1,602 4-H Clubs (‘07-‘08: 22,031 members enrolled in 1,550 clubs). Club membership was reported in four categories:
- 4-H Community Clubs (18,696 youth)
- 4-H In-School Club (167 youth)
- 4-H After-School Clubs (2,600 youth)
- Military 4-H Clubs (847 youth)
- 48,833 youth were involved in 1,583 School Enrichment groups (‘07-‘08: 40,597 youth were involved in 1,540 School Enrichment groups).
- 5,977 youth were enrolled in 192 Special Interest, Short-Term groups (‘07-‘08: 6,844 youth were enrolled in 298 Special Interest groups).
- 5,426 youth participated in 76 4-H Camping programs (‘07-‘08: 9,289 youth participated in 108 Camps); of these:
- 4-H Overnight Camps (1,296 youth participated in 27 camps)
- 4-H Day Camps (4,130 youth participated in 49 camps)
- 450 youth enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study (‘07-‘08: 370 youth enrolled in Individual Study).
- 830 youth participated in 11 School Age Child Care groups (‘07-‘08: 11 youth participated in 1 SACC groups).
- 64% (50,972) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 15.4% (12,261) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race).
- 8% (6,222) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 7% (5,633) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
- 4.3% (3,505) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
- 1.3% (1,085) Other combinations.
- 6% (4,725) live on farms.
- 27% (21,441) live in towns with populations under 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas.
- 22.6% (18,042) live in towns and cities with populations of 10,000-50,000.
- 9.8% (7,773) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000.
- 34.6% (27,697) live in central cities of over 50,000.

VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
6,826 adult volunteers were involved in Extension Youth programs, an increase of 243 over the previous year. Of these, 5,394 (79%) were women and 1,432 (21%) were men. 781 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Reported adult and youth volunteers totaled 7,607.
TRAINING
2,721 adult volunteers and 1,488 youth volunteers were reported as participating in training conducted at the county and state levels; 819 other adults (4-H professionals, non-volunteers, or adults from other organizations) were trained through 4-H programs.
YOUTH PROJECT ENROLLMENTS
These totals include youth projects (with duplication, i.e., a youth may enroll in more than one project) for both individual and group enrollments. Projects reflect a minimum of 6 hours of contact. Projects exceeding 2,000 statewide are highlighted.
