YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 87,588 (unduplicated) youth participated in the Washington State Extension Youth Development Program for the 2009-2010 4-H year, an increase in reported youth (+7,910) from the previous year. Girls represented 53% (46,646) of the youth participants; 47% (40,942) were boys. A total of 93,325 youth (including duplicates) participated in one or more WSU Extension Youth Development programs.
In addition to youth programs traditionally led by WSU Extension 4-H professionals and volunteers, these statistics include youth served by Food $ense, EFNEP, Master Gardeners, and other Extension personnel delivering youth programming consisting of 6 or more hours of contact. Food $ense programming accounts for over half of reported Extension youth enrollments.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 23,300 youth were members in 1,456 4-H Clubs (‘08-‘09: 22,310 members enrolled in 1,602 clubs). Club membership was reported in four categories:
- 4-H Community Clubs (19,658 youth)
- 4-H In-School Club (70 youth)
- 4-H After-School Clubs (2,071 youth)
- Military 4-H Clubs (1,501 youth)
- 59,609 youth were involved in 2,000 School Enrichment groups (‘08-‘09: 48,833 youth were involved in 1,583 School Enrichment groups).
- 6,898 youth were enrolled in 153 Special Interest, Short-Term groups (‘08-‘09: 5,977 youth were enrolled in 192 Special Interest groups).
- 3,074 youth participated in 42 4-H Camping programs (‘08-‘09: 5,426 youth participated in 76 Camps); of these:
- 4-H Overnight Camps (753 youth participated in 15 camps)
- 4-H Day Camps (2,321 youth participated in 27 camps)
- 444 youth enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study (‘08-‘09: 450 youth enrolled in Individual Study).
- 0 youth participated School Age Child Care groups (‘08-‘09: 830 youth participated in 11 SACC groups).
- 62.1% (54,390) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 17.4% (15,274) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race).
- 7.1% (6,197) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
- 6.4% (5,641) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 5.4% (4,395) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
- 1.6% (1,394) Other combinations.
- 5% (4,666) live on farms.
- 27% (23,928) live in towns with populations under 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas.
- 26% (22,622) live in towns and cities with populations of 10,000-50,000.
- 6% (5,233) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000.
- 36% (26,881) live in central cities of over 50,000.

VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
6,554 adult volunteers were involved in Extension Youth programs, a decrease of 272 from the previous year. Of these, 5,009 (76%) were women and 1,545 (24%) were men. 682 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Reported adult and youth volunteers totaled 7,236.
TRAINING
1,625 adult volunteers and 615 youth volunteers were reported as participating in training conducted at the county and state levels; 152 other adults (4-H professionals, non-volunteers, or adults from other organizations) were trained through 4-H programs.
YOUTH PROJECT ENROLLMENTS
These totals include youth projects (with duplication, i.e., a youth may enroll in more than one project) for both individual and group enrollments. Projects reflect a minimum of 6 hours of contact. Projects exceeding 2,000 statewide are highlighted.
