TOTAL YOUTH PROJECT ENROLLMENT -- 153,753
4-H is Washington State University's dynamic, informal, educational program for today's young people. The program combines the cooperative efforts of youth, volunteer leaders, Washington State University faculty, Federal-State-Local governments, and business.
The mission is to assist you acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society. 4-H programs are conducted in all 39 counties.
YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 82,817 (unduplicated) youth participated in the Washington State Extension Youth Development Program for the 1998-99 4-H year, an increase of 5,250 from the previous year. Girls represented 55% (45,762) of the youth participants; 45% (37,055) were boys. A total of 103,389 youth (including duplicates) participated in one or more 4-H Youth Development program.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 20,422 youth were members in 1,745 4-H Clubs; ('97-'98: 22,275 members enrolled in 1,812 clubs).
- 63,522 youth were involved in 1,536 School Enrichment programs ('97-'98: 48,503 youth were involved in 1,307 School Enrichment groups).
- 14,822 youth were enrolled in 560 Special Interest, Short-Term and Day Camp groups ('97-'98: 14,593 youth were enrolled in 686 Special Interest groups).
- 3,528 youth participated in 141 School Age Care groups ('97-'98: 836 youth participated in 22 SAC groups).
- 1,009 youth participated in 31 Overnight Camping programs ('97-'98: 896 youth participated in 36 Camps).
- 86 youth enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study ('97-'98: 88 youths enrolled in Individual Study).
Total (unduplicated) youths represented the following Racial Ethnic Groups:
- 62,051 (75%) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 9,467 (11%) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race).
- 4,332 (5%) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 3,973 (5%) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
- 2,994 (4%) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
Youth participants represented the following Residence distribution:
- 8.7% (7,219) live on farms.
- 25.3% (20,976) live in towns with populations under 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas.
- 43.6% (36,149) live in towns and cities with populations of 10,000-50,000.
- 5.5% (4,517) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000.
- 16.9% (13,956) live in central cities of over 50,000.
The distribution of youths by Grade/Division included:
- 26.5% (21,960) Primaries (K-2)
- 33.7% (27,883) Juniors (3-5)
- 21.3% (17,651) Intermediates (6-8)
- 16.2% (13,398) Seniors (9-12)
- 2.1% (1,759) Post HS or Not in School
- 0.2% (166) Special Education
VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
- VOLUNTEERS
9,316 adult volunteers were involved in 4-H Youth programs, an increase of 200 over the previous year. Of these, 6,835 were women and 2,481 were men. 1,208 members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Reported adult and youth volunteers totaled 10,524.
