TOTAL YOUTH PROJECT ENROLLMENT -- 163,221
4-H is Washington State University's dynamic, informal, educational program for today's young people. The program combines the cooperative efforts of youth, volunteer leaders, Washington State University faculty, Federal-State-Local governments, and business.
The mission is to assist you acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society. 4-H programs are conducted in all 39 counties.
YOUTH IN EXTENSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
A total of 93,533 (unduplicated) youth participated in the Washington State Extension Youth Development Program for the 1999-2000 4-H year, an increase of 9,380 from the previous year. Girls represented 56% (52,752) of the youth participants; 44% (40,781) were boys. A total of 114,177 youth (including duplicates) participated in one or more 4-H Youth Development program.
Youth participated in the following Delivery Methods (includes duplicates):
- 20,309 were members in 1,733 4-H Clubs; (‘98-'99: 20,422 youths enrolled in 1,745 clubs).
- 67,064 youths were involved in 1,455 School Enrichment groups ('98-'99: 64,858 youths involved in 1,587 School Enrichment groups).
- 24,033 youths enrolled in 803 Special Interest, Short-Term, and Day Camp groups; ('98-'99: 14,822 youths were involved in 560 Special Interest groups).
- 1,457 youths participated in 53 School Age Care groups; (‘98-‘99: 3,528 youths participated in 141 SAC groups).
- 1,141 youths participated in 43 Overnight Camping programs; (‘98-’99: 1,009 youths participated in 31 Overnight Camps).
- 173 youths enrolled in Family 4-H or Individual Study; (‘98-’99: 86 youths enrolled in Individual Study).
Total (unduplicated) youths represented the following Racial Ethnic Groups:
- 69,767 (75%) White (person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, N. Africa, or Middle East).
- 7,953(8.5%) Hispanic (person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or S. American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race).
- 7,016 (7.5%) Black (person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa).
- 5,692 (6%) Asian or Pacific Islander (person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, SE Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands).
- 3,105 (3%) American Indian or Alaskan Native (person having origins in any of the original peoples of N. America).
Youth participants represented the following Residence distribution:
- 7% (6,826) live on farms.
- 25% (23,778) live in towns with populations under 10,000 or in rural non-farm areas.
- 37% (34,419) live in towns and cities with populations of 10,000-50,000.
- 7% (6,316) live in suburbs of cities of over 50,000.
- 24% (22,194) live in central cities of over 50,000.
The distribution of youths by Grade/Division included:
- 29% (26,877) Primaries (K-2)
- 29% (26,767) Juniors (3-5)
- 20% (18,343) Intermediates (6-8)
- 20% (18,377) Seniors (9-12)
- 2% (2,493) Post HS or Not in School
- 0% (676) Special Education
VOLUNTEERS IN 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
- VOLUNTEERS
10,313 adult volunteers were involved in 4-H Youth programs, an increase of 995 over the previous year. Of these, 7,406 were women and 2,907 were men. 1,263 adult volunteers were reported as having given leadership in two or more roles. 1,307members were enrolled as youth volunteers. Reported adult and youth volunteers totaled 11,620.
